How does MPT help you with your outdoor performance goals?

The programming at MPT is top tier. There's a healthy mix of both consistency and variability that optimizes physiological adaptations. I am stronger, more balanced, and able to do hard things in the woods and on the water because of my training at MPT. I often carry a 50+ lbs. kayak through the woods to access rivers. I've noticed that carrying my boat with gear in it is easier than it's been in the past, and I have more stamina with long days on the water. My mobility is the best it's been in years, my core and back have developed, and I'm overall more capable to perform.

I work an office job and for years have struggled to combat the negative effects from a desk job. Since training consistently at MPT, my lower back doesn't hurt as much, my shoulders are more mobile, and everything feels better. The programming is well-rounded, dynamic, and the environment in the gym brings community together. It feels good to feel good.

What is your favorite race or event that you do?

The Green Race is my favorite race of the year. It's a class V whitewater kayaking race through the heart of the Green River gorge, located between Saluda and Hendersonville, NC. It's quite difficult to lay down a good lap. Anything can happen and you only get one shot. I've always come out of the Green Race season a better kayaker and more connected to our community. I've always been a fair-weather racer, but after some health issues, I've taken my health and fitness and lot more serious. I've been training year-round to have the fitness and stamina to lay down a good lap. Training at MPT is an integral part of my training plan.

How does MPT help you with your outdoor performance goals?

I work full time as a climbing guide for Pisgah Climbing School. With this job and lifestyle, I need the strength to handle diverse terrain and challenging routes. MPTs workouts often emphasize functional strength, which directly benefits climbing performance. Climbing guides are also often on their feet for long periods, climbing and belaying for long days. Endurance training helps me maintain high energy levels throughout a long day of guiding and climbing! As a result of cumulative long days on the rock, I often deal with repetitive strain on joints and tendons. MPT’s training incorporates exercises to strengthen key areas like the shoulders, fingers, and knees, helping to prevent overuse injuries common in climbing.

I also work on a few local search and rescue teams. For this, I need to be ready to go on a dime and be physically able to hike long distances, carry heavy packs, and manage bulky and heavy items in often awkward places. The functional fitness at MPT helps me stay prepared to perform well on any rescue!

How does MPT help you with your outdoor performance goals?

As a climbing guide, I think of myself as an industrial athlete. I use my body for work everyday. While climbing keeps me fit, I deal with muscular imbalances that can only be worked on at the gym. I also need to be in the best shape possible since one of the primary functions of my work is to manage people’s risk. Being physically fit is one way I manage risk. Not only do I have the capacity to perform my day-to-day tasks, but I also have more in the tank in case something goes sideways.

What is your favorite race or event that you do?

Last year I raced the Swank 65. It was a great challenge and rewarding to cross the finish line.

Occupation:

Rock and Ice Climbing Guide

I am the owner of Fox Mountain Guides and Climbing School

I have yet to pick one favorite race or event, but I'm always looking for ones that will push me out of my comfort zone and prove to myself that I can do hard things.
